Monthly News and Updates from the Clubs

Atomic Blast is Helping Kids Blast Off to Academic Success

On June 5, nearly 2,200 local kids BLASTED OFF with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City’s Atomic Blast Summer Enrichment Program. In addition to the Clubs’ six Unit locations, this year the Clubs partnered with Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) to bring the program to ten additional KCPS school sites! The summer enrichment program focuses on academic success and helping young students in grades K-6 to increase and/or maintain their literacy and reading scores. Through this partnership we are broadening educational resources and community support.

For our kindergartners, this was their first time attending school and they were just as excited as their parents! The more experienced students arrived with energy and great attitudes ready to enjoy the summer fun and meet new friends. We are now entering the fourth week and students have enjoyed many activities, such as Fun Fridays, raffle prizes, bingo and board games, all while learning critical thinking, math, and literacy and comprehension skills.

The six-week school site program runs through July 14th with the Club site program running nine weeks, through August 5th.

Club Teens Making College Visits

Club teens visit the University of Central Missouri.

College exposure through campus visits is a major component to ensuring our teen members achieve academic success. Last summer, teen members toured more than 30 college campuses! Only three weeks into summer 2017 and our teens have already made 15 college visits, including a visit to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO and an overnight visit to Missouri State University in Springfield, MO.  At Missouri State our teens stayed in the dormitory to experience “dorm life”, toured the university, learned about the college admission processes and reviewed college level course requirements.

By participating in college tours, our members are better equipped to make informed decisions when researching post-secondary options.

Volunteer Spotlight – Henderson Engineers

Olathe Club youth field day

Mixing rules with imagination is the guiding principle at Henderson Engineers! Henderson Engineers’ staff used that principle to create field day events that our Olathe Unit members would not forget. The volunteers “engineered” an obstacle course, tug of war, and fitness Simon-says games. To say our members enjoyed the field day is an understatement. Thank you, Henderson Engineers, for the fantastic field day!
