About the Thornberry Unit

The John Thornberry Unit opened in 1968 at East 43rd Street & Cleveland under Chairman of the Board Gordon T. Beaham, III. In 1984, the Genesis School relocated its program to the Thornberry Unit. The Thornberry Unit was renovated and expanded in 1999 through a $12 million campaign with Genesis School to become the Thornberry Center for Youth & Families. The Thornberry Unit is licensed by the State of Missouri as a school-age childcare site.

Meet the Unit Director

Sherman Thomas

Thornberry Unit Director

Sherman Thomas is an alumnus of the Thornberry Unit and is honored to rejoin as a staff member to serve our community. Growing up, Sherman participated in the RBI program and then went on to play four years of NCAA Division 1 Baseball at The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He next played independent baseball with the Lee’s Summit Monarchs. Following his baseball career, Sherman began coaching at the Urban Youth Academy.

While in Arkansas, Sherman received his Bachelors of Science in Rehabilitation Services with a minor in Recreation, followed by a Masters of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University.

Sherman comes from a Christian family of educators and sports lovers. He loves to travel and explore new places. Sherman is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He enjoys helping others reach their highest potential, regardless of their background.
